Who's taking you on holiday? When you next book a package holiday, don't be dazzled by the brochures - or always trust the advice of travel agents. It may not be obvious who you are dealing with

Article Abstract:

Research shows that the major travel agents are more likely to put the interest of large tour operators before those of the consumers. Also, there are concerns that the travel groups have so much power that smaller independents could be squeezed out, leading to less choice for consumers. A survey of 96 travel agents found that only three out of 12 Thomas Cook outlets displayed signs indicating declarations of ownership and none of the 10 AT Mays outlets displayed such signs. There is also concern about links between the travel industry and insurance companies. It is best to try both multiple chains and independents when choosing a holiday and it is also possible to book directly with a tour operator.
