Crime, punishment, and the market for offenses

Article Abstract:

The equilibrium market model of crime explains that crime is a social fact that survives in the society because offenders, private individuals, and government fail to adjust their behavior and change the current net return associated with crime. Economists feel that rules of optimizing behavior control offenders and the law enforcement officials. The deterrence hypothesis and the market model depend on the marginal efficiency of both positive and negative incentives of crime and on the interaction between demand and supply forces of offenses. Social costs and welfare must determine means of crime control.
