Establishing a Saudi presence through commercial agency

Article Abstract:

Foreign companies doing business in Saudi Arabia are often represented by a Saudi commercial agency or distributor. Care should be taken in choosing an agent, since agency agreements may be difficult to terminate. Agreements must conform to minimum requirements established by the Saudi Ministry of Commerce. Text of the Ministry's 1983 Model Contract is included. The contract need not be followed precisely, but the Ministry will refuse to register agreements that include substantially different terms.

Saudi agency competition can embroil foreign firms in termination disputes

Article Abstract:

The increase of foreign companies doing business in Saudi Arabia has resulted in an increase in the formation of commercial agencies there and competition for the new foreign business. Disputes over terminations of contracts have achieved a higher profile because the Commerce Ministry has changed its policy on registration of agencies. Case studies of disputes and dispute resolution recommendations are included.

New Saudi committee formed to look into agency disputes

Article Abstract:

The Ministry of Commerce in Saudi Arabia has created a committee to mediate in disputes between local agents of foreign firms. Recent cases over business connections being broken in order to sign with another local distributor have caused Chambers of Commerce to advocate laws to protect agents from unfair dismissals. This would be a shift away from current free-market policies.
