Returns to schooling in China under planning and reform

Article Abstract:

A study examining the data relating to schooling returns in China from 1950 to 1994 is presented. It is observed that prior to Cultural Revolution, returns for schooling were negligible. The returns for college education were also low when compared to other countries during this period. The positive effects of economic reforms on schooling returns are analyzed and compared with those under China's planned economy.
