A theatre of arrogance

Article Abstract:

E.P. Thompson was an historian who attacked certain French intellectuals such as Althusser for attempting to revive Stalinism. Thompson tended to make personal attacks, and see criticisms of intellectual positions as relating to himself. UK followers of Althusser, such as Paul Hirst and Barry Hindess, argued in 1975 that studying history served no purpose. Thompson protested against authoritarianism of this type which left some academics too frightened to be aware of their critical powers.
