Becks, step aside for star fellows

Article Abstract:

The role and worth of national teaching fellows in the United Kingdom is examined in the light of the award of 20 more fellowships at a ceremony in London on 15 July 2003, which brings to 80 the number of such fellowship holders over the last four years. Universities are expected to be keen to attract national teaching fellows to their facilities following strong hints from the Higher Education Funding Council for England that the presence of national teaching fellows will add cachet to any bids to house one of 70 planned centres for excellence in learning and teaching, which are each promised UKPd500,000/yr funding for five years.

Blueprints for healthy intellectual hothouses

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the changing face of architectural education in the United Kingdom. Traditionally, the studio, or atelier, has been at the heart of architecture education in the UK. However, the atelier culture, where students would beaver away into the night in a place of creative energy, intense relationships and mutual critique, is under threat as rising student numbers stretch resources and a growing number of students find themselves only able to come into the studio once or twice a week due to the pressure of balancing their studies and the other aspects of their life.

Moveable objects

Article Abstract:

Intrallect, an Edinburgh University spin-off company, has developed a learning object management system (loms) called Intra-Library. It is argued that as lecturers are already uploading learning objects to the Internet for their students to access, the logical next step is the pooling of these resources through the use of loms into a searchable online library for constant reuse.
