Clinical research needs a shot in the arm

Article Abstract:

A report has revealed that few UK medical schools produce clinical research of an international level. Neglect of clinical research will lead to unachieved potentials in patient care. Reasons for falling standards in clinical research include the decrease in resources for research in a health service dominated by market economics, a changing emphasis in research interest towards the study of cells and molecules rather than patients and organs and the fact that university staff have to combine research activities with teaching and clinical work.

Money is not a cure-all for Africa's poor

Article Abstract:

An overview of how the money donated by the developed world is spent in Africa, with particular attention paid to ways of making sure that the money actually gets to the people that need it. It is argued that those in the developed world are too fixated on the volume of charitable donations given and that they should instead deal with the serious problems that exist at the bottom of the aid framework in actually getting the aid to where it is needed.

Do not poach talent away from devastated territory

Article Abstract:

The developed world needs to do more to help countries, such as Sri Lanka, which were devastated by the tsunami that struck the Asian region on 16 December 2005. Instead of poaching all the best talent away from the region, the developed world should invest in educational facilities that will enable talented students to stay in their own countries and, in the long term, help their own countries to develop.
