Poachers open back door to students

Article Abstract:

UK universities are sometimes admitting candidates who have not used the official UCAS system, and this is causing problems where candidates have accepted a place elsewhere. The official system does not permit candidates to hold two places, but they may accept an offer through bypassing the system. Colleges of further education are especially likely to suffer since they do not use the UCAS system. Candidates may be originally rejected by a university, accept a place elsewhere, and then be asked back by the university that had rejected them.

Why the Windsors are more than a tabloid farce

Article Abstract:

The monarchy has tended to be a subject that United Kingdom academics have avoided, and this applied especially to academics on the political left. Ben Pimlott, a professor from Birkbeck College, London, surprised fellow academics by writing a biography of Elizabeth, Queen of the United Kingdom. Pimlott sees the monarchy as important in UK society, as is shown by the public reaction to the death of Diana, Pincess of Wales. Elizabeth ll is a political figure due to an accident if birth and is affected by both constraints and privileges.
