Commandos of the word

Article Abstract:

It is difficult to comprehend how one could think without any knowledge of language and how to measure intelligence without language communication. There are people known as idiot savants who can perform intricate mathematical feats in their heads or play the piano but cannot read either words or music. Children with William's Syndrome can engage in conversation on advanced topics yet cannot dress themselves. Natural selection is compared to science and related intelligence, and it is noted that the advances made by modern man in just one generation far outweighing what evolution and natural selection has achieved over millions of years.

Witches and wisdom

Article Abstract:

The witchcraft trial of Amy Denny and Rose Cullender in Bury St Edmunds, England, in Mar. 1662 indicates that a first-rate education does not necessarily produce a critical mind in people of undoubted intellectual brilliance. Much of the evidence against Denny and Callender was plainly stupid yet it was accepted by the two learned men who were key participants in the trial. Sir Matthew Hale, the judge, was the leading legal scholar of the time, while Sir Thomas Browne, the expert witness, was a doctor and renowned author. Both men were Oxford graduates.

Voice of the people recast as language of terror

Article Abstract:

Issues relating to the impact that Spain's campaign against separatist bombers has had on the quest to preserve the Basque language are examined from the point of view that the right to use a language of one's choice is an human right. It is argued that the case of the Basque language is a reminder that the protection of lesser-used languages relies, inevitably, upon the protection of the basic civil rights of freedom of expression and association.
