Degree plan splits Welsh

Article Abstract:

The University of Wales is contemplating major changes but academics, vice-chancellors and students are divided over plans to stop disintegration of the university by giving its colleges more power over degrees. Some believe the planned reforms could set a precedent for other troubled federal academic institutions while some question what role it will maintain as more power is devolved to member institutions.

Liverpool set for final China deal

Article Abstract:

Liverpool University is close to finalising a deal with Xian Jiaotong University for the establishment of the last foreign campus in China for the foreseeable future. Under the partnership agreement, a new institution, likely to be called Liverpool XJT University, will be created with its own degree-awarding powers.

Election debate plays out to few faithful

Article Abstract:

Only about forty people turned up at Manchester University January 2007 to hear the three University and College Union (UCU) general secretary candidates give their election speeches. Even the people present were unconvinced of the UCU's continued relevance to higher and further education staff.
