End of Labour honeymoon

Article Abstract:

The Dearing inquiry into higher education in the UK suggested that the role of the professional university teacher should be recognized and those not becoming involved in research should be awarded grants of 500 pounds sterling. The more individualistic approach favoured by many managers may be replaced by a national service. The constitutional changes leading to a Scottish parliament may result in universities responding to regional rather than national needs. Labour Education Secretary David Blunkett has yet to approve of the Dearing committee's recommendations on funding.

The evolution revolution

Article Abstract:

The principles of Marxism, which became embedded in many social science theories, have lost credibility since the collapse of the USSR. Biological theories, which originated with Charles Darwin, have frequently been put forward to explain human behaviour. Evolutionary theories based on the selfish gene, and supported by research into molecular biology and DNA analysis, may contribute to the debate about human behaviour for the first time.
