Fears for UKPd200m bid to aid research

Article Abstract:

Plans to commercialise additional university funding in England by channelling as much as UKPd200 mil through England's regions could fail as a result of a lack of capacity in regional bodies to handle the job, experts have claimed. The claims undermine a central plank of the Treasury-commissioned Lambert review of business-university links, which calls on England's nine regional development agencies to deliver a funding stream worth between UKPd100 mil to UKPd200 mil to help improve universities' output of research that is relevant to local businesses.

Staff who donate their home to university could win tax break

Article Abstract:

A proposal to provide tax breaks for academics who donate their homes and property to universities is received with mixed reactions. While supporters assert that this proposal, as part of fundraising efforts for universities and similar to the 'planned giving vehicles' scheme in the U.S., would be popular among childless academics, critics warn that the proposal could lead to a 'mis-selling' crisis in the area of higher education in the U.K.

Union calls for Hefce review

Article Abstract:

The University and College Union (UCU) is calling for a legislative review of the framework of the Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce) in order to restore its autonomy and enable it to distribute funds for teaching and research independent of government influence. The UCU raises the issue of academic freedom and also wants extra funds for Hefce to be used for strategically important departments faced with closure.
