Give everyone a fair shot in city with pulling power

Article Abstract:

The Mayor of London argues that while the city's reputation as a knowledge capital is deserved, more must be done to ensure equal access to education for people from all walks of life. It is contended that the best way to ensure equality of access is to make participation in higher education free, and it is acknowledged that the funding of such a system needs to be discussed further.

Open doors but halt early exits

Article Abstract:

Issues relating to the government's efforts to widen access and student participation in higher education in the United Kingdom are examined. It is argued that the challenge is not simply to get more students to enter into higher education, the real challenge is to make sure that they succeed and are provided with a service that meets their requirements and needs.
