Is vocational a bad word?

Article Abstract:

The negative image of the term 'vocational' has spurred schools and state vocational departments to replace the word in their names. The public notion that vocational schools are for the less intellectual students has stuck despite the developments in the schools' curricula. Some vocational educators fear that the name changes may only cause an indentity crisis in the academe but school officials aver that the improvements and advancements in the educational system justify the name changes.

What school-to-work means for tech prep

Article Abstract:

The federal aid for school-to-work (STW) system cannot be substituted for the federal grants meant for tech prep programs. There is no unanimity among the states for merging the two programs. Tech prep is a distinct vocational-technical training scheme within the wider STW system. STW is an attempt to create opportunities for higher education and employment for all students. Tech prep programs are directed exclusively at secondary and postsecondary vocational education.
