New battles on a wounded landscape

Article Abstract:

During the 80's both the Conservative and Labour parties have been remodelled in the attempt either to retain or to win votes, with the history of these parties being left behind. Modern politics sees far less difference between the major parties than was once the case and this makes forecasting results of elections, such as the UK general election to be held on Apr 9, 1992, very difficult. Both parties advocate making the country classless and fairer. Whoever wins will create history, the Conservatives by winning an unprecedented fourth term and Labour by getting at least an 8% swing, the largest since the second world war.

Leading the country by the head and the heart

Article Abstract:

The modern UK Labour Party must meet the needs of the market economy whilst taking action to ensure social justice is achieved. The Labour government has to be prepared to adapt in order to respond to wider changes in Europe. The 100 years anniversary of the founding of the Labour Party is due to be celebrated in Feb 2000. Founder Keir Hardie would have felt unhappy only a very few Labour governments have held power during the last 100 years. He would have also been concerned to learn about the continuing levels of illiteracy and poverty which exist in the UK, in the year 2000.
