Political correctness, campus malaise

Article Abstract:

There is considerable tension on US university campuses connected with the ongoing debates on political correctness, and controversies and negative images are being brought to light. A survey of over 200 senior staff showed that they were very aware of the current importance given to political correctness and that suspected Marxists and deconstructionists were being heavily criticised by student bodies. They did not believe that faculty should defer to such attitudes and said they would not be affected in the way curricula are decided. They were in favor of increased opportunity for the less-privileged and under-represented.

Tomorrow's world on the doorstep

Article Abstract:

Cooperation between different countries in southern Africa over eductaional issues is likely to increase, and mechanisms need to be developed to take advantage of diversity within the region to restructure higher education through cooperation. There are similarities between the 1990s and the post-independence era, since both periods are characterized by an emphasis on the benefits of education for the bulk of the population. Universities thus need to be able to respond to change, and there is an important role for regional organizations like the Association of African Universities.

Title fight for freedom

Article Abstract:

Institutes of higher education can only perform their duties to inform society and preserve individuality if free from government interference. Such interference was suspected when, in the 1988 Education Reform Act, the government retained powers to direct funding councils and to lay down conditions that institutions had to meet before they would get a grant. This is still being fought against although there have been some successes.
