Socratic empathy

Article Abstract:

Centre for Medical Ethics, Kings College, London, England, Director and Philosopher Jonathan Glover hopes that Kings will continue to have an important role in advising politicians on medical ethics. Glover combines theory and actual events in establishing the laws of medical ethics. Glover points out that he does not have extensive knowledge of the law or medicine but he does have the ability to look at medical ethic issues, and to use his skills to question beliefs. Glover will teach the medical students to cope with the ethical problems they are likely to face in their work.

Is the truth out there?

Article Abstract:

American philosopher Richard Rorty's ideas on objective truth are controversial. He has a popular following outside the academic world of philosophy, but many of his colleagues consider his work to be vague and popularized. Rorty rejects all accepted notions of truth, reality and objectivity, and begins from a definition of truth as an idea which suits a purpose. This leads to charges of relativism which Rorty rejects. Rorty, a staunch defender of liberal democracy, also strongly opposes the charge that his views eliminate moral and political values.

Shaking and stirring

Article Abstract:

Richard Rorty, the American philosopher, has always been controversial. Rorty is a professor of humanities at Virginia University and first published his views in his book 'Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature.' He feels that philosophy's importance lies in continuing to analyse rather than as the way to find hidden meanings. The way people carry out public service and their own viewpoints are ideas that have influenced Rorty.
