Too much hot air--and too little time

Article Abstract:

Mike Hulme, director of the Tyndall Centre at the University of East Anglia and one of the pre-eminent climate change experts in the United Kingdom, has attacked the country's research councils for their lack of understanding of the science of his field. Hume contends that, while climate change has become a dominant issue on the political agenda, the funding bodies have not caught up with this reality.

Article Abstract:

Paula Munderi, project leader for the Development of Antiretroviral Therapy in Africa trial, began her involvement in the fight against Aids in Africa as a result of her personal involvement with family members who were diagnosed with the disease. Munderi's work is offering a lifeline to communities in Africa that have been devastated by the disease.

Dearth of new blood will stifle research

A report to be published in February by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) says urgent action is need to prevent a crisis in the social sciences in the UK. The report reveals the full extent of staffing problems in this field.
