Versailles' Chinese legacy

Article Abstract:

National leaders in China organised several events in April 1999 to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the nationalist protests throughout China against western imperial powers in 1919, with Peking University holding a modest academic conference. The Chinese government appears willing to acknowledge May 4 1919 as symbolic of Chinese youth's willingness to embrace modern values such as science and democracy. The government invited students to many official celebrations to diffuse potential student demonstrations, while permitting Peking University to hold the international conference to enable the May 4 Movement to be reassessed.

New discoveries from the early dynasties

Article Abstract:

Long-held academic views on ancient Chinese civilisation are being called into question by new archaeological discoveries. Excavated carved jades from the southeast and northeast of China are totally diverse, forcing scholars to question the origins of Chinese civilisation and challenging their views on the number of civilisations existing in China from around 6000BC to the 20th-century. Some carvings are of human-like figures which may represent priests or spirits and which are totally different to any other objects excavated elsewhere.

Sino the times

Article Abstract:

A number of major archaeological discoveries have been made in China in the 25 years to 1996. The Institute of Archeology and local provincial bodies are in charge of archaeological research in China. The provincial bodies compete against one another, and an overall view is difficult to obtain. Discoveries do not always fit into established knowledge, though they do illustrate the diversity of cultures in China to the 3rd century BC when it was unified. Fewer resources are available for archaeology as China becomes richer.
