Reaping brisk sales of CD-Rs, TDK adds DVD-Rs, DVD-RAMs to lineup

Article Abstract:

TDK Corp expects sales of its optical recording media products to increase by 30% in 1998. The company sells recordable and rewritable CDs, MiniDiscs as well as magnetooptical discs. It also plans to introduce its own line of DVDs and DVD-RAMs by spring of 1998. TDK has put in place a production system for manufacturing 8.5 million discs monthly, with 4 million discs from its Chikumagawa plant in Japan, 3 million discs from its Georgia plant in the US, and the remaining 1.5 million discs from its Luxembourg plant.

Pioneer focuses on DVD to expand shares of optical media market

Article Abstract:

Pioneer Corp is focusing increasingly on the DVD family of discs. It has been aggressive in the development, production and supply of DVD-R discs. In spring 2000, Pioneer launched a 16x-speed DVD-ROM drive. In Jul 2000, it launched the DVR-S201, a 4.7GB DVD-R drive, primarily for authoring data. It has also introduced the DRM-7000 industrial-use optical disc changer which is compatible with DVD-Rs. Pioneer is planning to expand its production capacity for DVD-RWs beyond 600,000 units in 2001.

Increasing production, TDK pursues lucrative optical media market

Article Abstract:

TDK Corp is a leading player in Japan's recording media industry. The firm is a recognized maker of all tape and disc formats, including magneto- optical discs. It foresees acute competition and it intends to benefit from the fast-growing demand for optical discs. To meet increased demand, TDK's management will change its production plans to achieve a monthly production of 12 million recordable CDs and 4.7 million MiniDiscs.
