Video: Pricing Plunge; Portable Power Plays Tell VCR Show Story

Article Abstract:

The 1984 Summer CES saw VCR Hi Fi become a reality. The maturation of the industry was evident. There is still a great deal of controversy over the imminent 8mm-half-inch market war. Despite growing opposition to the 8mm format, several companies, including Polaroid and Canon, introduced or announced 8mm products. Virtually every VHS VCR supplier introduced Hi Fi models. Major Korean and Taiwanese consumer electronics producers are entering the VCR market.

New Numbers Document Video Market Pricing-Volume Enigma

Article Abstract:

Sales of blank video and audio cassettes grew greatly in 1983. Unit sales of videocassettes were up 125.2 percent and audio tapes were up 7.3 percent. In dollar volume, videocassettes were up 58.1 percent and audio cassettes were up 5.8 percent. An average of 9.24 videocassettes were sold per home VCR. A table shows unit and dollar sales of video and audio cassettes for 1982 and 1983.

Konica's Miller: New No-Brands Putting Heat on Video Pricing

Article Abstract:

Konica, in June 1983, introduced its new lines of audio and videocassettes. Paul Miller, Konica Audio-Video Division general manager, has been pleased with his company's lines success. Miller is concerned about the unbranded tapes making their way to retailers.
