Applications of magnetic amplifiers to high-frequency DC-to-DC converters

Article Abstract:

Improved amorphous magnetic materials are enabling magnetic amplifiers to be used again as pulse-width modulators (PWM) in high-frequency dc-to-dc forward power convertors. Advantages of magnetic amplifiers include high reliability and stability against environmental stresses, including electrical and mechanical stability. An analysis of the control characteristics and power losses of a forward magnetic amplifier is performed by modeling core properties and storage and recovery times of the convertor diode. Modeling results indicate that the magnetic amplifier performance is seriously affected by the reverse recovery of the diode, with the dead angle of the PWM becoming a serious problem under certain conditions. Other results indicate that iron loss and switching loss are inversely proportional to the turns of core winding.

Semiconductor optical amplifiers

Article Abstract:

Regeneration, the traditional method of compensating for optical loss in lightwave communication systems, is cumbersome. Direct optical amplification of light signals is advantageous in systems that are loss limited, where dispersion effects are not a limiting factor. Systems operating near the dispersion minimum and most coherent, externally modulated and soliton systems can utilize optical amplifiers. Local area networks (LANs) are loss limited and can benefit from simple optical amplifiers. Recent advances in semiconductor laser amplifiers are discussed in detail. Their applications to lightwave systems are also discussed.
