Photodynamic therapy of human cancer

Article Abstract:

PDT, or photochemotherapy, of human cancer is performed in two steps: injection of a photo-sensitizer and activation of the photo-sensitizer by exposure to 630-nanometer (nm) light. PDT requires the presence of oxygen. The agent produced by photo-activation that is most responsible for tumor destruction is believed to be singlet oxygen. The most-often used photo-sensitizers include porfimer sodium and hematoporphyrin derivative. An exciting area of PDT research involves treating intracranial tumors. The published results of clinical PDT in treating gynecological cancer, ocular cancer, intracranial cancer, cutaneous and subcutaneous cancers, endobronchial malignancies, gastrointestinal cancer and superficial bladder cancer are discussed.

New Zealand's advantage

Article Abstract:

New Zealand has hosted the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum of 1999 and has stressed the benefits of free trade. Most tariffs, and all export and domestic subisidies have been eliminated over a 15 year period, and the remaining tariffs are to end by 2006. There has been a free-trade agreement with Australia, but New Zealand has acted unilaterally, on the whole. Many New Zealanders are opposed to these moves, though trade barriers would probably not help New Zealand.
