Alternatives to least squares

Article Abstract:

The least squares technique for fitting a line to data is very applicable to well-behaved data but results can be deceiving if the data are not quite well-behaved. Several criteria are available to evaluatethe effectiveness of other options for fitting lines such as good performance with well-behaved and poorl-behaved data, good statistical properties, location/scale invariance and computational tractability. Approaches should be based on specific requirements since all the criteria cannot be met comprehensively.

Dot plots of multiway data

Article Abstract:

Graphical representation greatly enhances the clarity of statistical data gathered through a multiway data collection process. One of the most effective methods of representing data is through dot plotting since it allows statisticians to quickly see variations in continuously measured data. Several guidelines in properly representing data through the dot plotting approach is discussed.

A trio of statistical double takes

Article Abstract:

Statistics play a crucial role in public policy and private decisions, so a strong grasp of them on the part of individuals and the entire population is important. A chewing-gum survey, a 95% accurate disease test, and the tendency to publish only interesting experimental results are presented as examples of how non-statistical thinking can skew results and perceptions.
