Big telcos headed for the altar?

Article Abstract:

GTE Corp. and Bell Atlantic, two major telecommunications companies, disclosed a tentative agreement to merge their respective businesses. The tentative merger deal between GTE and Bell Atlantic, which is seen as one of the US' five biggest corporate merger agreements ever, will result to the establishment of the largest local-exchange carrier firm in the US with $125 billion in current market capital and about $53 billion in sales. The tentative merger deal between GTE and Bell Atlantic requires the endorsement of regulators and the firms' shareholders.
