Academia and industry race forward

Article Abstract:

For some companies, mechanical, electronic and computer technologies merge in the products they produce, although with others, mechatronics relates to factory automation systems used in production. An automated lace-cutting system designed by Professor Mike Preston from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Loughborough University, and engineering colleagues, acts as a model for mechatronic project management. Lace has a complex structure which limits the cutting or scalloping process. The system involves generating the cutting path by obtaining data from the material prior to cutting, using a vision system, with cutting undertaken by laser.

Integrated drives save design time

Article Abstract:

Manufacturers are simplifying gearbox design and are launching many compatible components in their ranges, easing manufacturing logistics and reducing productioncosts. New gearboxes are thus competitive and customers do not need to hold many different spare parts. Customers tend to prefer specification of geared motors instead of individual gearboxes, which cuts design and specification time. New gearboxes include shaft mounted from Simplatroll, servo gearbox from Reliance Gear, high performance gear units from Hansen Transmissions and the use of sintering technology by Trident Engineering.
