Business boom or work bloom?

Article Abstract:

The year 2000 is expected to be another banner year for engineers in the design and consulting business. One of the main reason for this boom is that firms are constantly understaffed yet they rarely turn down new clients. The other reasons include the absence of new investments, the industry-wide use of Microsoft Office, higher prices, increased volume and reduced marketing spending. However, such a situation could eventually lead to an industry decline that could be catastrophic.

Integrating living and learning

Article Abstract:

Adams, Morgenthaler and Company Inc/AMC Engineers was cited by the 'Consulting-Specifying Engineer' magazine for its design of a school dormitory at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Working within severe budgetary constraints and strict requirements on ventilation and energy efficiency, the engineering firm was able to exceed those requirements and even built the three residence halls and a dining facility ahead of schedule.

The new A201: opportunity knocks

Article Abstract:

Engineering firms may see new opportunities for their businesses with the recent changes in the American Institute of Architects' A201 code, including a provision that allows architects to delegate design duties to the contractor. Some engineers, however, may find disadvantages at this as contractors become more involved in design, but the decision depends heavily on the architects' design philosophy.
