Smart composites are fast becoming a reality, with the development of new technology providing a simple, cost-effective way of embedding smartness in advanced materials without harming mechanical performance. Dera Farnborough is developing a method incorporating a layer of polyester fabric, previously imprinted with porous conductive tracks, within the composite.

Piezos keep force under control

Article Abstract:

PBT of Harlow is upgrading its range of Power Breaker portable and socket RCDs using low cost piezoelectrics. The new developments were undertaken in a move to reduce the cost of small circuit breakers and improve speed. Possible applications include use in analogue meters, relays, and robotic grippers.
