How to select a microcontroller

Article Abstract:

Microcontroller selection is most efficiently accomplished with a well-defined set of system requirements and by experience with the technology. Designers can follow suggestions and guidelines, however there is no universal checklist that can aid with the large number of decisions that must be made. Embedded system designers must choose microcontrollers with a specific purpose in mind, and they must choose them early in the design process. The level of performance required (4-, 8-, 16-, or 32-bit products) is the first decision that must be reached. Standard benchmarks are not useful for this purpose. Only critical real-time calculations and physical constraints specific to the system being designed are helpful. The second step involves special requirements imposed by mechanical aspects of the system, including quantity, frequency and type of all I/O signals. A top-level block diagram is essential. The third step is definition of the application memory requirements; these should entail program and data memory.
