I didn't get to where I am today without...training: whatever stage in your planning career, topping up on your education helps

Article Abstract:

Head of local authority consultancy at Hillier Parker, Brian Raggett, describes his initial training in planning through a broadly based degree course at South Bank Polytechnic. The course helped him to realise that planning was not only about urban roads and housing design guides, and that there is not always a single right answer to a given planning problem. He joined Hillier Parker in 1979, combining working, training and learning on the job. He became a specialist in retail planning and has broadened his horizons further in the fields of local government finance, regeneration and compulsory purchase.

Taking control of the numbers game: as the DoE's five-year review of the Planning Statistics returns gets underway

Article Abstract:

The DoE's Quarterly Statistics are a significant part of most planning departments and were introduced in the 1970s. The majority of districts send their own statistics returns and there has been a move towards creating longer lists of separately included application types. Anomalies include the General Development Procedure-Article 21-Submission of Details.
