Ideas

Article Abstract:

Those who run companies should not too quickly dismiss what does not fit the business plan. Listening and consideration are advisable, but knee jerk-reactions usually greet new ideas. An idea might be suitable for partnering or licensing out. At Toyota a very large percentage of the huge number of ideas from employees are accepted. Outsiders who try to bring an idea to a big company encounter the problems of ownership of the idea and potential lawsuits, with concomitant secrecy agreements. They are very restrictive and stipulate that nothing not patented be discussed. . Companies discussed include Exxon Research & Engineering, Xerox, and Fox TV.

The shape of things to come

Article Abstract:

Pharmaceuticals may differ in action if there are differences between optical antipodes. Racemates, equimolar mixtures of optical isomers, usually are in pharmaceuticals, however. Enantiomers of approved single, fermentation-generated isomers might be tested profitably. Chiral effects can be very complex. A conference in Germany on the technology of chirality is discussed. Companies mentioned include Dutch State Mines (DSM) and BioCatalysis. Drugs listed include estrone, thyroxine, penicillamine, indacrinone, Epoetin, nadifloxacin, and ketamine.
