Managing to be competitive in a global context...

Article Abstract:

Research laboratories worldwide experience a profound transformation as the result of international competitiveness, volatile markets and budgetary cutbacks. National leaders are now concerning themselves with how, why, when and which research is applied. In the US, an effort is underway to speed the transfer to industry of Federal R&D, at a cost estimated around $70 billion for FY 1990. This funding is part of a larger program aimed at making the US electronics industry more competitive in the world market. Organizing around specific technological objectives and moving quickly to get products on the market has been a Japanese specialty since the mid-1970s. Overall international competitiveness will intensify as more countries move into the area of research and development.

Finishes provide the technical edge

Article Abstract:

There are several finishes which can change the appearance or properties of extruded aluminium. Aluminium products can be painted with electrophoretic, spray or wet spray finishes. They can be treated with electroless nickel plating, which offers protection against corrosion. They can also be anodised, which makes them durable.
