Name, rank and number

Article Abstract:

The Electrical Contractors' Association (ECA) argues that the lack of a British Standard and BS number for the 16th Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations will place British contractors and manufacturers at a disadvantage when tendering for public works contracts. The ECA points out that the status accorded to the Wiring Regulations by the European Commission must be improved. Furthermore, the competence requirements for installation work would be enhanced by giving the Wiring Regulations national status, helping to improve safety as well as quality.

Three is the magic number: ther's a popular misconception about the number 3 that may appear on the new labelling for miniature circuit breakers

Article Abstract:

The new British and European Standard BS EN 60898, Specification for circuit breakers for overcurrent protection for household and similar installations, is referred to as the standard for miniature circuit breakers (mcbs). The number three has caused confusion in the market place, and actually refers to the energy limiting class of the device on which it appears. Energy limiting class three, provides the lowest energy let-through. Rated current and instantaneous tripping symbols must be clearly visible when a circuit-breakers is installed.
