New membranes breathe life into oxygen generation

Article Abstract:

Air Products and Chemicals Inc. of Allentown, PA, led a team to develop an air-separation process that is based on a class of "mixed conducting" ceramic membranes (A2B2O5) and is aimed to reduce the cost of producing oxygen from air by one-third. The effort, which is part of a $25-million, three-year program, is under the sponsorship from the Federal Energy Technology Center of the US Department of Energy. The technology would make air flow across the surface of a membrane heated to 900 degrees Centigrade, while O2 molecules are adsorbed on, and then ionized by the thermally excited membrane.

Simplify flash calculations

Article Abstract:

Flash calculations for binary and ternary mixtures can be carried out with a simplified procedure. For binary mixtures, the calculations are reduced to solving a first-order equation, while ternary mixtures require solving a quadratic equation. The derivations start with a material balance and a series of objective functions are then introduced. The method is simpler when compared with other existing methods.
