Process control for short and small runs

Article Abstract:

A small run is when only a few products of the same kind are to be manufactured while a short run involves a several jobs per operator in a production cycle. Statistical process control (SPC) is applicable to small and short runs although the two require different techniques. Some methods rely on special tables while some mathematically transform data. Attribute short-run SPC techniques can result in recognizable process patterns in small runs while demerit and scoring systems can gather more information from attribute data. Advance planning, however, remains vital whichever method is employed.

Quality profession must learn to heed its own advice

Article Abstract:

There are a number of key areas in which the quality profession can make improvements. Quality professionals must seek to abandon 20th century philosophies and technology, recognizing that there is not necessarily a single best way of tackling a particular task. They must also recognize that they have a vested interest in creativity and innovation, and must not necessarily try to eliminate variability, slop and redundancy. Consideration must be given to abandoning long-term planing in favour of strategic adaptation.

The pursuit of happiness: use market-based management to improve performance and go beyond TQM

Article Abstract:

Market-based management (MBM) utilizes the free market economy model to organize and motivate employees and uses Hayek's theories to improve a company's performance. It consolidates six key systems, with an analogue in the market economy, into the organization. This management system helps to clarify the inconsistencies of TQM and enhances organizational learning. On the other hand, total quality management (TQM) is incomplete and includes only three key management systems. The six key systems of MBM are discussed.
