Rocking wave senses distributed strain

Article Abstract:

The new 'Optical Kerr' rocking vector technique being developed at Kings College in London, UK, enables strain, pressure, radiation, voltage and chemical species to be measured in a large structure. The technique involves passing a constant light beam through the fibre, and then suddenly focusing 1 W of light in the other direction, making linear polarisation rock in one direction. The extent of rocking reveals the amount of strain or other parameter on the fibre. The technique can measure strain to an accuracy of 1 microstrain. It has temperature accuracy of around plus or minus 1 deg C. It also has spacial accuracy of between 10 cm to 1 mt. The technique can be used to improve control and reliability of aircraft, chemical process plants, dams and other structures. Another technqiue being developed by Westland and Southampton University is also discussed.

Micro sensors have macro robustness

Article Abstract:

Cambridge Consultants' new fiber optic precision measuring technique, which resists vibration, shock and bending, is very suitable for making measurements in awkward situations. It has applications in both commercial and industrial engineering environments. The optical sensors use low coherence length position determination.

Rocking for more power

Article Abstract:

Wave power generator, which extracts energy from wave power, is simple, elegant and relatively low cost. It is based on what naturally occurs when a loose cargo is left on deck, free to move under the action of rough seas and the effect is enhanced by using elastomeric mooring cable.
