Schemes to lift the spirits

Article Abstract:

The 1994/95 Civic Trust Awards revealed four special award winners, 18 award winners, and 106 commendations. The receivers of the four special awards included Kiln Orchard, Rosthwaite, Lake District National Park; Uppark house, South Harting; Drax Power Station Landscape Restoration Scheme; and the Carfax Environmental Improvement Scheme, Horsham. The 1994/95 awards have been endorsed by environment secretary John Gummer.

Local implications from a global revolution

Article Abstract:

The Association of Consultant Planners has recently held a debate which discussed the implications of the technical revolution. The debate was aimed to discuss the 'Cities in Evolution' paper by Brian Smith of the Centre for Research in Environmental Sciences and Technology of the University of Glasgow, which proposes the creation of televillages which combine conventional forms of work with teleworking.

Scotland and the urban village

Article Abstract:

A recent PET conference in Glasgow discussed the subject of new settlement construction in Scotland. John Thompson outlined how the Urban Village Group can involve the community, private and public sector in new sustainable development. Urban villages are currently being considered in Argyle, Lothian, Lanarkshire, and Aberdeen. Professor Greg Lloyd questioned the sustainability of such villages.
