Targeting ASICs and FPGAs

Article Abstract:

An integrated circuit (IC) design must be implemented in silicon following design capture and synthesis. Target technologies for the process include application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) libraries, custom layout and user-programmable devices like field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA). Custom layout is the most flexible, since performance can be improved by independently placing, routing and sizing individual transistors, but it is also the most expensive option. An ASIC library consists of predetermined sets of simple functional cells; mapping an IC design into an ASIC library simplifies design analysis and layout. FPGAs can generally be turned around more quickly, since the underlying structures' mask layers already exist.

Birch tree might combat cancer

Article Abstract:

The University of Illinois has reported that it is on the edge of coming up with a cancer cure in the form of the bark of a birch tree. Researchers in the university claim that the peeling of this particular tree has a substance which can neutralize the effects of fatal skin cancer or melanoma. Despite this announcement, researchers in the medical field are still skeptical about the success of alleged cancer cures because of past failures in this area.
