Technology council helps Square D Co. manage global R&D

Article Abstract:

The usefulness of the technology council to Square D Co's efforts to pursue external relationships istouted. The company, a manufacturer of electrical distribution and controls equipment, established its technology council in early 1992. As opposed to the usual council structures which are confined to representatives of a single corporate department or function, the firm's technology council has 12 senior managers who handle product development and manufacturing and who represent thewhole company. Some guidelines in forming effective technology councils are also provided.

Managing change - who does it best?

Article Abstract:

An article which appeared in Fortune magazine in Mar. 1995 cited some most-admired companies for having mastered the art of change management. Change management was defined as 'maintaining continuity while fostering a state of perpetual renewal.' Jeffrey E. Slemrod, Pfizer Inc.'s change management trainor, believes that there are very few change managers because it is difficult to master the task. Twelve steps to successful change management are presented.

A three-point guide in managing people in high-technology companies is prescribed by Roger Shepard, a regional manager for an individual and organizational development consulting firm based in Princeton, NJ. This includes asking each employee to define what successful coaching is, sitting down from time to time with every employee to find out if there are problems and encouraging employees to get together with their peers regularly.
