Transportation

Article Abstract:

Transportation technology moves toward electric cars, smart car roads, high-speed intercity transportation, high-speed rail, and new methods of control. More than 30 US states, particularly California, have special programs to encourage alternate-fuel vehicle usage. The Green Motor Works, a car dealer in Hollywood, CA, handles only electric vehicles and can replace an internal combustion engine with an electric system. The Green Motor cars are from Denmark and use lead-acid batteries and series-wound dc motors. The US Advanced Battery Consortium was formed by the big three US auto makers in 1990 and is working on the batteries that will be used in electric vehicles in the future. In 1993 Chrysler plans to sell up to 100 demonstration TEVans, electric models of the Plymouth Voyager.

Aerospace & military

Article Abstract:

NASA will reduce the size of its staff in 1996 in response to the federal government's decision to cut the agency's budget to $14.5 billion. However, NASA officials claim that the reduction in staff size will not affect the agency's missions. Meanwhile, several developing nations are planning to produce their own aircraft in 1996 to take advantage of the booming aerospace sector. These aircraft, together with warships and carriers planned for production in 1996, will use Stealth technology.

Transportation

Article Abstract:

Several innovations in sea, air and land transportation will be unveiled in 1996. These includes civilian satellite navigation and landing systems, high-speed ships and boats, sturdier aircraft flight data recorders and high-speed trains. The use of the Global Positioning System in transportation is also expected to expand dramatically in 1996 as companies and government agencies try to equip transportation systems with greater intelligence.
