Worms show way to efficiently move

Article Abstract:

A focus on the ways in which earthworms and dung beetles ease their path, has helped a Chinese engineering company in determining how to pass electric currents between electrodes on a surface, making it possible to attract water lubrication to places most required. Water is known to be a great lubricant and drawing on the knowledge from the plant or animal kingdom has always resulted in wonderfully simple solutions to the most complex problems.

Variators improved with power

Article Abstract:

A report on a latest development in stepless ratio variators that saves space and cost, and works in a similar way to a planetary gearbox but uses planetary discs rather than gears is described. This device is designed and developed for industrial use to provide continuous variation of output speed over a 5:1 range from electric motors rated at up to 1.85kW.

Plastic crowns mean leak-free joints

Article Abstract:

The 'High pressure quick connect', developed by Oystertec, is a novel, snap-together, medium-to-high pressure pipe joint that is ideal for low cost mass production. A crown shaped plastic part is key to this leak-free connector that enables fluid power connections to be placed much closer together and attached more quickly than in conventional designs.
