Biological impacts of boating at Kawau Island, north-eastern New Zealand

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that the anchoring of recreational boats at New Zealand's Kawau Island does not pose an immediate environmental threat. Although anchoring can damage the pinnid bivalve Atrina and anchoring scars persisted for up to three months, popular boating site environments were not clearly distinct from the environments of less popular sites.

Subtidal benthic marine litter at Kawau Island, north-eastern New Zealand

Article Abstract:

An evaluation is presented on human-generated trash at various marine recreation sites at New Zealand's Kawau Island. Refuse found on the ocean floor included glass and plastic bottles and tin cans. The authors recommend the use of rubbish collection facilities during periods of high-intensity usage, such as summer, to reduce litter amounts.

A review of approaches for classifying benthic habits and evaluating habitat quality

Article Abstract:

The current state of knowledge relative to methods used in assessing sub-tidal benthic habitat quality and the classification of benthic habitats is assessed. While the basic approach is generic, IBIs specific to organism groups and locations continue to proliferate.
