Factors influencing pulp mill effluent treatment in Alberta

Article Abstract:

A study of environmental effects, pulp mill technology advances, government incentives and control, market influence and public concern on effluent treatment methods used in 6 pulp mills in Alberta shows that the public opinion influenced the government's environmental policy most. However, in the future pollution will be measured not by its impact on the environment but by whether the environment has been unaffected or not, and environmental concerns and philosophies will become more complex. For these reasons, the government should consider the long term effect rather than the short term effects of any policy.

The environment and structural adjustment: lessons for policy interventions in the 1990s

Article Abstract:

Structural adjustment policies in India have been associated with increasing poverty related to environmental problems. Similar structural policies introduced in Mexico in the 1980s did not include environmental issues and standards of water quality due to which waste disposal was low, rate of deforestation increased and water reserves decreased. Thus economic reforms should not place too large a burden on natural resources and environmental issues should be linked to trade and technology so that there is global environmental responsibility.
