Immune response and survival

Article Abstract:

The observation on the survival of birds in relation to non-specific immune response to challenge with an antigen shows that they often predict a large and significant amount of variation in survivorship. The immune responses have evolved to defend hosts efficiently against the debilitating effects of parasites on host fitness.

Antioxidants and condition-dependence of arrival date in a migratory passerine

Article Abstract:

The condition-dependence of the arrival date in the male barn swallow (Hirundo rustica L.) and the role of carotenoids in mediating arrival date are investigated. Arrival date is condition-dependent in barn swallows, since high repeatability of arrival date, lower value of carotenoids in blood in early arriving males is found.

Parasites, predators and the duration of developmental periods

Article Abstract:

A study was carried out to investigate the extent to which nest predation and parasitism independently contributed to the evolution of developmental periods using birds as a model system. The results show that nestlings adopt specific strategies to minimize the negative impact of parasites of host fitness.
