Industrial pretreatment: trickling filter performance and design

Article Abstract:

Andrew Amis Randall and assoc conducted a study o trickling filter performance and design. They concluded that the organic loading was the only critical operational parameter affecting COD removals of the trickling filter. They also found that the percent COD removal was relatively independent of hydraulic loading. However, their conclusion seem flawed as the the fitting procedure seemed to have a bearing on the poor prediction of percent COD. Also, Randall and company failed to explain the large deviations between the experimental results and the model.

Oxygen transfer in trickling filters

Article Abstract:

A new model has been used to compute and analyze the mechanics of oxygen transfer in trickling filters. The model, which uses three boundary conditions to evaluate the performance of trickling filters, was employed in the calculation of the maximum oxygen transfer rates at a liquid-biofilm interface. Results showed that the maximum oxygen transfer rate is strongly influenced by the substrate biodegradation kinetics.

Closure by C.S.P. Ojha and N.J.D. Graham

Article Abstract:

The use of recursive relationships in predicting deep-bed filters works well for short-term investigations. Any error encountered during experimentation will lessen the reliability of these predictions. Continuous updating of parameters will negate the effect of erroneous results. The sum of the weighting coefficients of the recursive parameters should be unity, and lesser value will increase the error.
