Morphology and sediment distribution of the Zanzibar Channel

Article Abstract:

Morphological analysis of the Zanzibar Channel shows its most important feature is a "central deep" 30 to 40 m in depth. The eastern flank of this depression contains steep, irregular coral platforms, while the west is smooth and gentle with occasional patch reefs. Each area developed differently through sediment deposited by the Rivers Ruvu and Wami, having produced a high carbonate content on the eastern side of the Channel.

The brown macroalgae Padina boergensenii as an indicator of heavy metal contamination in the Zanzibar channel

Article Abstract:

The brown macroalgae Padina boergensenii appears to be a reliable indicator for heavy metal contamination in the channel between Zanzibar and mainland Africa. Samples of brown algae were taken from 30 stations north of Zanzibar to south of Dar es Salaam, and the presence of this algae significantly correlated with elevated levels of zinc, copper, iron, manganese, cadmium, chromium, nickel, arsenic, sulphur and vanadium.

Coral culturing and temporal recruitment patterns in Zanzibar, Tanzania

Article Abstract:

Coral culturing techniques have been developed to help restore degraded coral colonies. Pollution and overexploitation of reef resources have threatened human subsistence in tropical coast regions. Study results show within a year, coral fragments 1-2 cm long can be the basis of coral colonies. Peak harvesting of fragments is best done either Feb-Apr or Nov-Dec.
