Personal narratives and environmental ethics

Article Abstract:

Environmental philosopher Arran Gare is praised for asserting the value of narrative to environmental ethics in his article 'MacIntyre, Narratives, and Environmental Ethics.' Part of the narrative discussed in his article is his expanded vision for the goals of philosophy. Gare argues that science should promote the admiration and protection of wild nature instead of its transformation into consumer products. By suggesting the many possibilities of living well in nature, Gare's philosophy is in the tradition of Henry David Thoreau.

On Norton and the failure of monistic inherentism

Article Abstract:

Values rely only upon human consciousness. They may either be instrumental or intrinsic value. Instrumental value refers to the benefits offered by a thing to its valuers; whereas intrinsic value refers to the importance and appreciation given to a thing regardless of the benefits it provides. Value accorded to nature should not be limited to instrumental value because things can be valued intrinsically without necessarily representing them as persons.

Avalanches as social constructions

Article Abstract:

An argument is presented that environmental awareness for the benefit of humans is not necessarily mutually exclusive of environmental awareness for the benefit of nonhuman life. It is posited that alleviating human suffering and alleviating the suffering of nonhuman life can be achieved simultaneously.
