The functional basis of a primary succession resolved by CSR classification

Article Abstract:

The CSR theory aims to describe the principal mechanisms underpinning vegetation processes, and was the first theory to consider the interplay between competition, stress and disturbance in shaping phenotype. The detailed visualization provided by CSR classification, combined with its mechanistic explanation of community change, demonstrate the promise of this methodology as a quantitative tool for comparative community ecology.

Trunk cutting initiates bottom-up cascades in a tri-trophic system: Sprouting increases biodiversity of herbivorous and predaceous arthropods on willows

Article Abstract:

The effects of trunk cutting were examined on the regrowth responses of two dominant willow species and the subsequent effects on the community structure of herbivorous and predaceous arthropods. It is concluded that the severe physical damage caused by trunk cutting greatly increased the biodiversity of herbivorous and predaceous arthropods through bottom-up cascading effects.

Underlying effects of spatial aggregation (clumping) in relationships between plant diversity and resources uptake

Article Abstract:

A simple mathematical model based on spatial resource use complementarity was designed to investigate how clumping could modulate effects of species richness on ecosystem functioning. Results reveal that clumping could have a number of 'hidden' consequences, for example on invasibility of a community and on competition between species.
