Blue ribbon composting at the county fair

Article Abstract:

Composting is a feature of the Annual Ulster County Fair in New Paltz, NY, which attracts fairgoers as well as serves as a cost-effective means of disposing the fair's accumulated waste. The county's Resource Recovery Agency, in collaboration with fairgoers, stage a composting demonstration consisting of homemade compost bins, manufactured bins and vermiculture bins. Volunteers are hired to collect animal bedding and food residuals from vendors and, with supervision from agency staff, to educate fairgoers about composting. The resulting compost reduce the event's waste by as much as 30%.

On-campus composting gets the right fit

Article Abstract:

Middlebury College in Vermont decided to adopt the passively aerated windrow system (PAWS) for composting food residuals after the state granted the school a grant to expand its recycling program. PAWS involves the collection of food residuals from the college's dining halls, golf course, ski area and satellite campus. The material is then dumped on a 6,800-acre land which, once turned into compost, can enrich the soil on campus, as well as be used for growing herbs in the dining halls. To eliminate moisture and odor problems, pipes are used to regularly aerate the windrows.
