Composting and recycling at Indiana prisons

Article Abstract:

The Indiana Department of Correction launched a composting and recycling program in prisons throughout the state. The initiative was developed to reduce solid waste disposal by 50%, generate more jobs for inmates and foster good will in local communities by allowing them to deliver leaves and other yard trimmings to prison composting facilities for free. The Putnamville Correctional Facility was used as the pilot site and involved the diversion of food residuals to the prison's composting facility. Local officials are planning to introduce the program to other prisons.

Backyard composting education programs

Article Abstract:

A survey conducted in the US and Canada shows that backyard composting can be made more effective through education involving promotional activities such as public demonstrations and school programs. Majority of the survey respondents are from areas that have prohibited yard trimming from land-filling and incineration. Only a few education programs have been successfully operational for long durations.
